Carter Update

Oh Carter.  This kid is as sweet, snugly, goofy and ornery as they come.  At two and a half he is in full on toddler mode. Carter is still pretty laid back and chill on the whole.  Most of the time he's a go with the flow kid, but he isn't afraid to show his true feelings every once in a while.  He loves all kinds of cars and trucks, books, coloring, puzzles, being outside and playing with his sister and brother.  He conquered potty training at around 27 months and hasn't looks backed since.  Carter is still a pretty great eater.  Some of his favorites are peanut butter and jelly, teddy grahams, carrots, yogurt, applesauce, pancakes, pretzels, pasta, mac n cheese, hamburgers, beans and rice, chicken nuggets and sweet potato fries.  He's had to have a bit of change in his diet and sadly some of his favorites have had to go.  Thankfully he's really good about eating whatever you put in front of him unless it's a hot dog.  It's the one thing he will not eat.  He is loving his 'school' one day a week and has done really well.  He asks to go every week and I'm so thankful for his sweet teacher who does an amazing job with his little class.
The past 6 months to a year have been a bit rough on Carter.  He's always had a bit of eczema but about 9-12 months ago it started getting worse.  This summer it was terrible.  We had multiple doctors tell us it was one of the worst cases they had seen.  We tried what seemed like everything!  Wet/dry pajamas, baths every other day, baths every day, bleach baths, creams, steroids, dermatologist, anti itch meds, anti itch gels, all of this and he still got little to no relief!  It was frustrating for us and for Carter.  He was constantly scratching his skin and had to be in full on footie pajamas or long pants and long sleeves all day, even in the summer.  There was a point where he even had to wear socks on his hands to keep from scratching.  Finally, this fall I broke down.  I went back to his pediatrician and begged to see an allergist.  I had been told that eczema isn't caused by allergies and in most cases it isn't, however I wasn't convinced of that in Carter's case.  In October we took him to an allergist and had him tested.  They did skin testing which I 'm not the biggest fan of but at that point I was just ready to have some answers.  Well answers is what I go and they were very overwhelming at first.  He tested positive to allergies caused by milk, eggs, soy, some nuts, cats, dogs, dust mites, and most trees, weeds and grass.  After the initial shock and overload of info passed I started cutting things from his diet and cleaning my house like a crazy woman.  He takes oral allergy meds daily and if we are still not having much relief with those he will move to allergy shots around age 3-4.  A month later we've seen a lot of progress.  He still has flare ups and I'm working on tracing what causes them.  We have found that he can only wear clothing that is 100% cotton.  Polyester pajamas cause huge breakouts on his torso area and make him very itchy.  Interestingly enough he just got over a 10 day fever/sore throat virus and during that time I had him off all allergy meds.  His skin looked better than I have seen it in a long time.  Now that we're back on Zyrtec and into daily life his skin is looking irritated again.  Strange.  Through all of this Carter has been such a trooper.
We love you sweet boy and love to watch how you grow and change as you draw closer to three.  You have captured the heart of pretty much everyone you meet and our a very loved little boy. We are so thankful God chose you for our family!!
